Thank you for your interest in our Alternative Spring Break opportunities. Since Passover happens to fall during our Spring Break in 2013, we will NOT be facilitating an Alternative Spring Break trip at that time. Please check back for opportunities in Spring 2014. To get an idea of what types Alternative Spring Breaks lay ahead, please see below for what we offered in 2012 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What We've Done Hillel Alternative Spring Break in Miami This year Hartford Hillel will be partnering up with Hillel's City Year Break to go to Miami, Florida in March 2012. Trip dates: March 18th-March 25th, 2012 Make your spring break matter! We will be volunteering in the community to make a difference. The mornings will be spent with college students from the University of Hartford and other schools making physical improvements to schools and community center and afternoons in direct service with children, young adults and people from low-income neighborhoods. During the evenings participants will have speakers, city tours and time to soak up the flavor of the city they are working to improve. Cost: $250 program fee + Round trip flight (This is a heavily subsidized trip, actual cost per student is $1,200- however students only pay a $250 program fee) The $250 provides accommodation, daily kosher catered meals, transportation to and from the airport. Students will hear from the Faces of
Homelessness panel, a speaker panel of formerly homeless individuals
which is incredibly moving and eye opening. Another highlight is an
education panel, including veteran teacher, Vivianne Burques, which will add context to the work our participants will be engaging in. There are also supervised excursions into Miami, dinner out and other fun activities. Sample Work Site Itinerary Monday We will be volunteering helping to clean an old Miami city cemetery which includes sections for Jews, Catholics, Blacks and others. We will be led by a historian who can share with us information about Jewish Miami and the value of taking care of people, even after they pass. This is an amazing service we will be doing for the community and we will make sure to frame it for our participants in a holistic way relating to our week’s goals. Please note that there is a tradition for Kohanim not to enter a cemetery. If anyone in your group is unable to participate in this morning of service, please let us know ASAP so we can coordinate an alternative. Tuesday Working at Charles R.
